Delgatie Castle

You'll spot the pink harled walls of Delgatie Castle long before you reach Turriff - that distinctive colour stops you dead in your tracks. This is a proper working castle, not a museum piece behind velvet ropes, and that's what makes it worth the drive into Aberdeenshire.

The castle dates back to 1030, though what you see today is largely 16th and 17th century, all jutting towers and narrow windows designed more for defence than comfort. You can walk through rooms that still feel lived-in - kitchens, bedrooms, the lot - and there's something quite moving about seeing how folk actually got by in these draughty old places. The courtyard gives you good views of the structure, and the grounds are pleasant enough for a wander.

History types will love it more than families with young kids, to be honest. There's not masses to do if you're not into architecture and period rooms, and it's the sort of place where you'll spend a good hour if you're interested, maybe forty minutes if you're not. It's absolutely worth pairing with a broader castle trail around the northeast - plenty of ruins and grander properties nearby to explore.

If you're based at Turriff Caravan Park, it's barely twenty minutes away, making this an easy half-day outing. East Balthangie is a touch further but still manageable. Check ahead for opening times and admission before you visit - these family-run castles don't always keep regular hours.
