Wood of Delgaty

The Wood of Delgaty is a proper forest walk just outside Turriff, where ancient woodland meets open moorland in that distinctive Aberdeenshire way. You're looking at mixed deciduous trees - oak, birch, rowan - criss-crossed by paths that range from easy strolls to more challenging hikes depending on which route you fancy. The terrain's typical Scottish Highlands: muddy in winter, occasionally boggy after rain, but absolutely worth it when the light comes through the canopy. In spring the bluebells put on a show; autumn brings the usual colour palette but nothing you won't have seen elsewhere.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the kind of place where you can lose an afternoon without trying, though an hour covers the main paths easily enough. Families with younger kids might find it a bit rough underfoot in places, and there's not much in the way of facilities - no cafe, no visitor centre, just you and the trees. That's rather the point, mind.

If you're staying at Turriff Caravan Park (barely a mile away), this becomes a natural extension of your holiday - proper handy for burning off energy after a day exploring the wider region. Greenwood Loch and Shepherd's Loch Glamping are slightly further out but still close enough for a morning visit. It's free to access and there's usually somewhere to park near the entrance. Go early on weekends if you value peace and quiet.
