Devil's Grinding Mill

The walk up to Devil's Grinding Mill is a bit of a slog, truth be told. You're climbing steeply from near Kirkby Stephen towards what amounts to a dramatic limestone scar with a gushing waterfall - and yes, the name comes from a local legend about the devil himself grinding corn up here. The whole thing takes maybe forty minutes on foot depending on your fitness, and you'll know about it in your legs.

What makes it worth the effort is the view back down towards Kirkby Stephen and the raw, almost industrial quality of the limestone workings. This isn't a tidy tourist spot with benches and interpretive boards. It's genuinely wild - water thundering over stone, the landscape worn and weathered. History buffs might get a kick from the industrial heritage angle, though there's precious little signage to explain it. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might struggle with the climb and won't stay interested long once they've seen the waterfall.

There's no admission charge and you can visit anytime, though sensible footwear is essential - it gets boggy and loose underfoot. Budget two hours including the walk and time to properly look around. If you're staying at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just down the road, you've got a proper outdoor adventure on your doorstep that beats another visit to a visitor centre. Go when the weather's reasonable; in heavy rain this place becomes genuinely treacherous.
