Discovery Point and RRS Discovery

The RRS Discovery sits right on the Tay waterfront near Tayport, and it's genuinely impressive to stand next to a proper Antarctic exploration ship. This wooden vessel carried Captain Scott on his 1901-1904 expedition, and stepping aboard makes that history feel immediate rather than dusty. The Discovery Point museum wraps around the ship itself, so you're not just reading about polar exploration - you're walking the decks where the crew actually lived.

Inside the museum spaces, the exhibits focus on the expedition's science and survival rather than just the tragedy angle, which is refreshing. There's solid detail on the wildlife observations, the magnetism research, and how they actually managed down there. Kids tend to engage well with the hands-on bits and the ship exploration, though under-tens might lose interest after an hour or so.

It's best visited on a clear day when you can appreciate the Tay views and actually see the ship's lines properly. The site handles casual drop-ins fine, but allow a good two hours if you want to do the ship and museum justice. Staying at either Tayport Links or Larick Campsite puts you right on the doorstep - no faff with transport.
