Doire Ban

The walk up Doire Ban rewards you with proper Highland views across Loch Leven and towards the Mamores. It's not a bruiser of a peak - 788 metres - but the approach from Ballachulish is steep enough to feel like proper work when the weather turns.

You're looking at a straightforward hillwalk rather than a technical climb. The path isn't always obvious, especially higher up, so map skills help. On a clear day the vista across the loch is genuinely good: braes rolling down to water, mountains stacked behind. Cloudy? You get atmosphere, which some days is enough.

This appeals to walkers wanting something achievable without full mountaineering kit, or anyone camping in the area who fancies a morning's exertion. Budget three to four hours return from Ballachulish - longer if you're moving carefully or stopping often. It's free, naturally.

The caravan parks nearby - Glen Nevis especially, just 5.4 miles south - make this a cracking option for a long weekend. You've got Invercoe at 3.2 miles if you want somewhere closer, and Red Squirrel at 4.8 miles is excellent if you're after a smaller, quieter site. Doire Ban pairs well with the bigger Glencoe walks if you're doing a week in the area. Not essential, but if you're based at one of these parks and the weather's decent, it's absolutely worth the leg work.
