Màm na Gualainn

The walk up Màm na Gualainn rewards you with views across Loch Leven that make the climb worthwhile, even on a grey Scottish day. It's a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll - start from the forestry track near Ballachulish and you're looking at a solid two to three hours for the round trip, depending on your fitness. The peak itself sits around 680 metres, which means the views stretch across the loch towards Glencoe and beyond. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a cloudy one, you'll disappear into the mist halfway up and question your life choices.

This is one for proper walkers rather than families with small kids. The path gets steep in places and muddy after rain - it's not the sort of outing where you can potter about for twenty minutes and call it done. But if you're camped at Invercoe or Red Squirrel Campsite, both just a few miles away, it makes a cracking half-day expedition. The nearby Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park is another decent base if you're planning a few days of Highland walking.

Timing matters here. Morning starts beat afternoon ones - the weather can roll in quickly, and you don't want to be descending in fading light. It's free to walk, obviously, and genuinely worth the effort if you're the sort who likes to earn a proper view rather than just drive somewhere and get out of the car.
