Doune Castle

The first thing that hits you about Doune Castle is how film-ready it actually is - all those narrow stone staircases and crumbling battlements that Hollywood directors go mad for. It's a proper 14th-century fortress just outside Callander, and walking through the gatehouse feels like stepping directly into Monty Python's Holy Grail (which was actually filmed here, if that's your sort of thing).

You're free to explore at your own pace, clambering up the keep and poking around the courtyard where archers once trained. The views across the River Teith valley aren't dramatic, but they're genuine and peaceful - the sort of outlook that reminds you why people bothered building defensive strongholds in the first place. Allow a solid hour if you're the type to read every information board; 45 minutes if you just want the Instagram angles and some fresh air.

It's genuinely excellent for families with kids old enough to manage stairs without moaning constantly. Young children might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes - there's not much hands-on activity, just rooms and walls to look at. History enthusiasts and Game of Thrones fans will get proper value out of it though. The car park is small but workable.

Staying at Keltie Bridge Caravan Park puts you within easy reach of this, and Callander itself makes a decent base for exploring Stirling's wider castle circuit. Admission costs vary, so check ahead, but it's typically modest for what you get.
