Downs Orchard

The woodland at Downs Orchard sits just outside St Veep and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Cornish forest walk - tall trees, decent footpaths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Cornwall in the first place. It's genuinely peaceful, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think without the constant hum of the tourist trail.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, especially if you're staying at Tremeer Farm's yurts just down the road and fancy a proper leg-stretch. The forest floor is soft underfoot and there are enough turns in the path to keep things interesting, even if you're only here for an hour. Kids won't get overwhelmed by length, but they'll need something to keep them occupied - bring a nature hunt list or let them collect sticks.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so come prepared. Best visited on a dry day when the paths aren't waterlogged, which rules out half the year in Cornwall if you're unlucky. Spring is lovely if you time it right, though you won't find anything showy - this is genuine woodland, not a managed garden.

It pairs well with the other parks in the area. If you're based at Killigarth Manor, this works as a good morning outing before heading elsewhere. Free to visit, no entry fee, and roughly 20-30 minutes of actual walking if you meander. Don't expect a destination on its own, but as part of a broader holiday exploring the region, it's a solid option.
