Drws-y-Coed Copper Mine

Industrial archaeology doesn't get much more atmospheric than this forgotten copper mine tucked away in the hills above Caernarfon. The scattered remains of Drws-y-Coed tell the story of Wales's mineral wealth - stone foundations of engine houses, rusted machinery parts, and the entrance to workings that once employed dozens of local men.

Walkers and history enthusiasts will find plenty to explore among the ruins, though you'll need decent boots as the paths can be rough and overgrown in places. The mine operated through much of the 19th century, and while nature has reclaimed most of the site, the industrial bones are still clearly visible.

There's no visitor centre or formal interpretation, so bring your imagination and perhaps do a bit of research beforehand to make sense of what you're seeing. The location is properly remote - expect a decent walk from wherever you park, and don't rely on your phone signal.

Families staying at nearby Beddgelert Campsite or the various sites around Llanberis could easily combine this with a day exploring Snowdonia's mining heritage. Allow a couple of hours if you're keen on industrial history, less if you're just passing through. It's free to wander around, though access depends on finding the unmarked paths that lead to the workings.
