Durgan (tidal area)

The beach at Durgan reveals itself only when the tide pulls back, exposing a crescent of sand and shingle tucked beneath steep wooded cliffs. You'll find it near Helston, down a steep lane that feels like it's barely navigable - park at the top and walk, honestly. The main appeal is the sheer drama of the setting: dense woodland tumbles down to the beach, and at high tide the whole spot transforms into something completely different. It's not a sprawling sandy beach - more intimate than that.

Walkers love it because the coastal path above offers tremendous views, and the descent itself feels like proper adventure. Families with young children might find the climb back up a bit grim, and there's not much in the way of facilities or shops, so bring what you need. The beach itself is fine for paddling and exploring rock pools, though it's pebbled rather than sand, which sorts the grain-seekers from the adventurous fairly quickly.

Go at low tide, obviously, or you're wasting the trip. The timing matters here - check before you head out from wherever you're based. The Secret Garden Glamping, about six miles away, makes a reasonable base for exploring this corner of Cornwall, though frankly you could spend a full day walking the cliffs here without needing to venture far.
