Dyfi Wildlife Centre – Cors Dyfi

The boardwalk at Cors Dyfi takes you out over wetland that actually feels wild. You're walking above reed beds where bitterns boom in spring, marsh harriers hunt overhead, and in winter the whole place floods into something properly dramatic. It's a nature reserve run by the Wildlife Trust for Wales, and unlike some reserves that feel more like visitor attractions than actual habitats, this one hasn't been neutered.

You'll spot water rails, snipe, and if you're lucky - which I wasn't, annoyingly - otters. The boardwalk is accessible enough for families, though younger kids might lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're serious into birds. Bring binoculars or you'll spend half your time squinting at distant shapes. Spring and autumn are best for migrating birds; winter floods things out beautifully if you don't mind mud on the access paths.

It's free to access, which is decent of them. Allow an hour to amble the main route without rushing. The nearby Gwerniago Campsite sits just a mile or so away, making this straightforward to slot into a proper Powys week - you've got plenty of walking and water around Machynlleth to keep you busy without needing to stick to manicured attractions.

The centre itself is modest, but that's rather the point. Come for the actual wildlife, not the facilities. Bring a waterproof and patience.
