East Riding Archaeology

The archaeology museum in Beverley is tucked away in a converted Georgian building, and it's the sort of place you stumble into half by accident then stay for longer than expected. Proper local stuff - Roman finds from the Humber, Saxon burial goods, medieval pottery shards that actually tell you something about how people lived rather than just sitting in cases looking mysterious.

You'll find flint tools, coins, jewellery fragments, all the bits and pieces that archaeologists have pulled out of East Yorkshire over the years. The displays are straightforward rather than flashy, which means you can actually read what you're looking at and absorb it. Kids get a decent amount from it if they're old enough to care about ancient history - younger ones might find it a bit static after twenty minutes, if we're honest.

Beverley itself is worth an afternoon on foot anyway - the Minster is genuinely stunning, and the town centre has proper character. If you're camped at Butt Farm just outside the town, this sits nicely into a rainy-day itinerary or a morning before heading elsewhere. You're not talking about a full day's outing, but it works well as part of a wider East Riding exploration.

The whole thing rewards a gentle wander rather than a rushed visit. Worth knowing what days and hours they're open before you head down - smaller museums can be variable with their schedules.
