You've got Romano-British finds, medieval bits, and a decent collection of Yorkshire paintings without the exhausting sprawl of somewhere like the V&A. The building itself is modern and well-lit - a proper contrast to the Georgian grandeur you'll see walking round Beverley's streets.

What you actually do here is potter around themed galleries at your own pace. The archaeology section works well for anyone vaguely curious about how people lived round here over two thousand years; the decorative arts room has some cracking silverware and pottery. There's a learning space for kids that doesn't feel patronising, though it won't keep under-eights occupied for hours. Realistically, allow ninety minutes to two hours unless you're genuinely into every object.

Free entry is the real draw - you can pop in for half an hour without guilt. Opening hours are generous on Tuesday and Thursday evenings if you're not a morning person. The town itself is worth your time anyway. Beverley Minster dominates the skyline and beats most English cathedrals for sheer impact.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Butt Farm is closest at a mile and a half - the Treasure House makes a solid rainy-day option or a morning activity before heading out to explore the Wolds. It's not a destination in itself, but alongside the minster, the pubs, and the market square, it rounds out a proper visit to Beverley.
