East Schurroch

Deep in the Aberdeenshire highlands near Blairgowrie, East Schurroch is a proper working forest where the trees actually matter more than the footfall. This isn't a manicured walk with benches and interpretation boards - it's the real thing, managed for timber and wildlife, which means the paths have genuine character.

You'll find yourself among tall conifers and mixed woodland that feels genuinely remote, even though you're only a short drive from civilization. The forest floor is soft underfoot, and on a quiet morning you've got a decent chance of spotting red squirrels or roe deer. The walks vary depending on which routes you take - some meander gently through the trees, others climb more steeply toward better views across the Highlands.

Walkers and nature photographers get the most from this place. It's not a destination for a quick 30-minute amble - you need at least two hours to do it justice, and preferably longer if you want to reach the higher points. Families with young kids might find it a bit demanding, and there's precious little in the way of facilities, so pack a flask.

It's free to access, and the proximity to Nethercraig Holiday Park three miles away makes this an excellent addition to a Scottish Highlands break. If you're based there, East Schurroch gives you a proper forest experience without the crowds. Just come prepared for Scottish weather - these woods can feel very different on a drizzly afternoon.
