East Somerset Railway

The platform at Cranmore is where you board a proper heritage railway that actually works - not some static museum piece. The East Somerset Railway runs steam and diesel engines along a restored stretch of track that closed back in 1964, and it genuinely feels like stepping back into British rail history.

You'll spend time watching vintage locomotives being serviced in the working shed, wandering the platforms, and if you're keen, actually riding the trains themselves through the Somerset countryside. The journey heads out towards Mendips with views that wouldn't look out of place on a 1950s postcard. It's genuine railwayman stuff rather than theme-park theatrics.

History buffs and anyone who gets excited about engineering detail will find hours to occupy themselves. Kids enjoy it too, though the novelty can wear thin if you're not genuinely interested in locomotives - sitting on a stationary carriage for ages isn't everyone's idea of a day out. Allow at least two hours if you're visiting the site itself; add another hour-plus if you're riding the trains.

Mells is the closest town, though it's small. If you're staying at Glamping on the Hill nearby, this makes a solid half-day addition to a park holiday - something different to break up the routine without travelling far. Go mid-week if possible; weekends draw crowds and special event days charge extra. Check what's running on the day you visit - it's not daily operation.
