East Wood

East Wood sits just outside Ilkley, a proper bit of moorland forest that doesn't shout about itself. You get woodland paths threading through bracken and heather, with views out across the valley when the trees thin out. It's walkers' territory - the sort of place where you'll see locals with their dogs and proper hiking boots rather than families on day trips.

The woodland itself is pleasant but honest. It won't blow your mind with ancient oaks or dramatic vistas, but there's something quietly satisfying about it, especially on a clear morning when the light filters through the trees the right way. Allow a couple of hours for a decent amble, though you can do shorter loops if you're pushed for time.

Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after the first half hour - there's not much drama to keep them entertained. But if you're staying at somewhere like Windmill Retreats (just over six miles away) and fancy a proper stretch of the legs without having to commit to a full day out, this works well. The paths are generally clear and not too demanding, though it's moorland so things get boggy after rain.

Go early if you can. The car park fills up on weekends and the paths lose their appeal once they're clogged with people. Ilkley itself has decent cafes if you want breakfast before or a post-walk coffee - worth building that into your plans.
