Pizza One

Strange name for a Bronze Age rock art site, but Pizza One gets its moniker from the distinctive circular cup-and-ring markings carved into the moorland stone over 3,000 years ago. The weathered gritstone boulder sits on Addingham Moor, a short but steep climb from the village below.

Finding it requires a bit of detective work - there's no obvious signage, just a rough path heading uphill from the lane. The carvings themselves are subtle, worn smooth by millennia of Yorkshire weather. You'll need decent light and perhaps a splash of water to highlight the ancient spirals and concentric circles.

Prehistory buffs will be fascinated by these mysterious symbols, though younger visitors might struggle to see what all the fuss is about. Allow an hour for the walk up and back, longer if you fancy exploring the wider moor. The views across Wharfedale are lovely on a clear day, making the effort worthwhile even if the rock art leaves you cold.

Accessible year-round and completely free, though the exposed position means it's properly bleak in winter. Combine with a visit to nearby Ilkley for tea and cake afterwards. Several holiday parks dot the area, including Clarion Lodge Campsite just two miles away, making this an easy addition to a Yorkshire Dales break.
