Grassgarth Hill

Standing at 462 metres, this modest fell on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales offers surprisingly good views across Wharfedale without the crowds that descend on nearby Pen-y-ghent or Ingleborough. The summit rewards walkers with proper panoramic vistas stretching south towards Leeds and north into the heart of the Dales.

Most people tackle Grassgarth Hill as part of a longer ridge walk, often combining it with neighbouring Beamsley Beacon for a decent half-day outing. The paths are well-marked but can get boggy after rain, so waterproof boots are essential. It's a straightforward climb from Ilkley, taking roughly two hours up and back.

Families with older children will manage this one fine, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the top. The real appeal lies in its accessibility - you can bag a proper Yorkshire peak without the full-day commitment that other Dales summits demand.

Grassgarth Hill works well as an add-on if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Ilkley. Clarion Lodge Campsite sits closest to the trailheads, while families might prefer the facilities at Esholt Holiday Caravan Park, which offers easier access to both the hill and Ilkley's shops and cafes for post-walk refreshments.
