Eastfield Wood

The woodland around Eastfield feels properly peaceful - dense enough that you forget Doncaster's just down the road, but accessible enough that you're not tramping through brambles for half an hour to get there. It's a genuine working forest with established paths that take you through mixed woodland, the sort of place where the light filters through differently depending on the season. Walkers will find plenty to occupy a solid afternoon here, and if you've got kids who don't need a visitor centre and gift shop to stay entertained, they'll burn off energy chasing through the trees.

Don't expect manicured gardens or signposted attractions - this is about woodland itself. The paths are well-trodden and manageable, though it can get muddy after rain. Spring and autumn are the obvious choices, though winter's quieter if solitude appeals more than scenery. Allow two to three hours depending on how far you fancy walking, or just thirty minutes if you want a quick breath of fresh air. Free to enter, which helps.
