Ecton Hill

The copper-green summit cone of Ecton Hill rises dramatically from the Manifold Valley floor, its distinctive shape a dead giveaway to the centuries of mining that once made this one of the richest copper hills in Europe. At 370 metres, it's not exactly a mountaineering challenge, but the views across the Peak District from the top are proper rewarding. The walk up from Hulme End takes about 45 minutes on a well-defined path that winds past the old mine workings - fascinating stuff if you're into industrial archaeology. Kids will love scrambling around the remains of the engine houses and spoil heaps, though keep an eye on them near the old shafts. The descent can be steep in places, especially after rain, so decent walking boots are essential. Best visited on a clear day when you can see across to Thorpe Cloud and the limestone peaks beyond. It's free to roam, naturally, and there's parking in Hulme End village. Walkers and families staying at nearby spots like Longnor Wood Holiday Park or Newhaven Holiday Park will find this makes a cracking half-day expedition. The hill works well combined with a visit to the Manifold Trail below - you can easily fill a full day exploring this corner of the Peak District.
