Wetton Hill (West)

Bronze Age burial mounds dot this windswept limestone hilltop like ancient sentinels, each one marking where someone important was laid to rest nearly 4,000 years ago. The western section of Wetton Hill holds several of these barrows, most now appearing as grassy humps that casual walkers might mistake for natural features.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the significance of these monuments, though don't expect dramatic stone circles or visible chambers. What you get instead is a proper sense of deep history combined with cracking views across the White Peak. The climb from Hulme End takes about 45 minutes through typical Peak District terrain - limestone walls, sheep pastures, and that particular Derbyshire light that makes everything look prehistoric.

Families with older children who don't mind a decent walk will enjoy the adventure, but toddlers will find the terrain challenging. The site works best as part of a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself - you're looking at maybe 20 minutes exploring the mounds before the novelty wears off.

From holiday parks like Hartington Hills or Bank House Farm Campsite, it's an easy drive to the starting point. Pack a flask and make it part of a day exploring the quieter corners of the Peak District, where you can still find spots that feel genuinely remote despite being well within reach of your caravan.
