Eddington Square

Just east of Cambridge, Eddington Square is a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight. It's not vast - you can walk it in under an hour - but the wetland habitat draws birds and dragonflies in genuine numbers, especially in summer. The paths are well-maintained and flat, which means it works for families with younger kids who'd struggle on moorland trails.

What makes it worth the trip is the variety. You get open water, reed beds, and grazing marsh all in one go. Birdwatchers come here to clock species they won't find in standard parkland. Winter can be quieter but often better for spotting overwintering wildfowl. Spring is loud with breeding birds - bring binoculars if you're keen.

It's accessible enough that you could combine it with time at Highfield Farm Touring Park or Cambridge Camping and Caravanning Club Site, both within easy driving distance. Neither visit demands all day, so you might pair it with a proper explore of Cambridge itself or another nature spot in the area.

The reserve does feel a bit exposed on blustery days, and the appeal is genuinely about wildlife rather than views or walks for their own sake. If you're after dramatic scenery, look elsewhere. But if you actually want to see something other than rabbits and pigeons, it's well worth the detour. Free to access and no crowds - exactly what you want from a local nature reserve.
