Edington Priory Church

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Edington is one of those medieval buildings that stops you dead in your tracks the moment you round the corner. Perpendicular Gothic at its finest - soaring windows, flint walls, and a chancel that frankly puts many cathedrals to shame. Built in the 14th century, it's the sort of place where you can actually feel the centuries pressing down on you.

What makes Edington special is how complete it feels. Unlike half-ruined abbeys scattered across the Cotswolds, this is a working church where everything is still standing. The interior is genuinely impressive - fan vaulting, original stonework, light flooding through those enormous windows. You can spend a good 45 minutes poking around, reading the memorials, working out the history.

It's brilliant for anyone interested in medieval architecture or religious history. Not so much for toddlers, unless they're the type who'll sit quietly for hours. The village itself is small and proper quiet - Westbury's just three miles away if you need supplies or a proper meal.

Admission appears free, though this being a working parish church, a donation box by the door is always appreciated. Best visited mid-morning on a weekday when you've actually got the place to yourself. If you're camping at Country View just down the road, it's an easy 20-minute walk. Worth the detour if you're in the area for a couple of days - especially combined with a wander around Bratton Camp or the White Horse on the downs nearby.
