Edward Elgar

Classical music isn't exactly my cup of tea, but even I found myself humming Land of Hope and Glory after visiting the Edward Elgar Birthplace Museum near Malvern. The composer's cottage at Broadheath sits in lovely countryside, and the small museum does a proper job of bringing his story to life without being too stuffy about it.

Music lovers will absolutely lap this up - there's original manuscripts, his bicycle, and recordings playing throughout. The cottage itself is tiny but atmospheric, giving you a real sense of how this world-famous composer grew up in quite humble surroundings. Even the kids seemed interested, though an hour is probably enough before they start getting restless.

What struck me most was how the Malvern Hills shaped his music. You can see why he found inspiration here - the views from the cottage garden are lovely, and those rolling hills appear in so many of his compositions. The staff are knowledgeable without being preachy, and there's a decent little shop if you want to take some Elgar home.

It's well worth combining with a walk on the nearby Malvern Hills themselves. The whole area has that timeless English countryside feel that clearly influenced his music.
