Oaken Coppice

Dense woodland stretches across rolling Worcestershire hills just outside Malvern, creating one of those proper English forests where you can actually lose yourself for a few hours. Oaken Coppice lives up to its name - ancient oak trees dominate the canopy, their gnarled branches creating a cathedral-like atmosphere that's particularly striking on misty mornings.

Walking here feels like stepping back centuries. The traditional coppicing methods still evident throughout give the place an almost fairy-tale quality, with hazel and hornbeam sprouting in neat clusters beneath the towering oaks. Wildlife enthusiasts will have a field day - I spotted red kites circling overhead and heard woodpeckers hammering away at dead timber.

Families with older children who don't mind a proper countryside ramble will find plenty to explore, though it's not pushchair territory by any stretch. The lack of formal paths means you're genuinely exploring rather than following a prescribed route.

Location-wise, it works brilliantly as a contrast to the more exposed walking on the famous Malvern Hills nearby. Allow at least two hours if you want to do it justice.
