Egryn

The ruins of Egryn chapel sit quietly on the Gwynedd coast, a few miles south of Talybont, and they're worth the short detour if you're camping nearby. What you find is a simple stone structure - medieval foundations with fragmentary walls - that tells the story of a religious community that once thrived here on this windswept stretch of North Wales.

It's not dramatic or particularly grand. No soaring arches, no elaborate stonework. But that's rather the point. Stand there on a clear day and you understand why someone chose this spot - the view across Cardigan Bay is genuinely fine, and the solitude does something to the place. Walkers will appreciate it most. History buffs too, particularly those interested in early Welsh Christianity and how settlements clung to these coastal margins.

Getting here involves a modest walk from the nearest parking, and the path can be boggy depending on weather. Allow 45 minutes all in. Bring proper boots. There's no formal visitor infrastructure - no gift shop, no café, no opening hours to worry about - which means you can visit whenever you fancy, and it won't cost you a penny.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks dotting this stretch - Lyons Sunnysands is barely half a mile away - Egryn works as a morning stroll before heading inland to Rhaeadr Nantcol Waterfalls or taking the short drive to Shell Island. It's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to this part of Wales in the first place.
