Rolling hills dotted with ancient burial mounds rise above this small Gwynedd village, where footpaths lead to some of Wales's most intriguing archaeological sites. Talybont sits in a valley that feels pleasantly forgotten by the modern world, with sheep-grazed fields stretching towards the peaks of Llawlech and Pen y Ddinas.

The countryside here tells stories going back millennia. Both Carneddau Hengwm Southern Tumulus and Northern Tumulus mark Bronze Age burial sites on the hilltops, while down in the valley you'll find an Iron Age Hut Circle that's remarkably well preserved. More recent industrial history appears at Mynydd Egryn Mine, where the old Ropeway Tower and Terminus stand as reminders of 19th-century slate quarrying.

Walking is the main draw. The terrain varies from gentle valley strolls to proper hill climbs, with Egryn providing a decent challenge for anyone wanting to work up a sweat. Views from the higher ground take in Cardigan Bay on clear days - worth the effort.

Barmouth lies about eight miles southwest if you need shops or a proper meal out, though the drive through the Mawddach Valley is lovely. Getting here involves winding country roads from either the A470 or coast road - not exactly a quick trip but half the appeal.
