Egypt Copse

A dense woodland walk tucked between Taunton and the quieter parts of Somerset, Egypt Copse is the sort of place locals know about but visitors miss. The trees here are thick enough that you lose the sound of traffic within minutes, which given its proximity to town is rather remarkable.

It's primarily a walkers' spot. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, paths wind through without too much fuss, and the canopy keeps things cool even on warm days. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which means it stays refreshingly unmolested. Bring decent shoes though - after rain it can be boggy.

You're looking at 45 minutes to an hour for a decent wander depending on which routes you take. History types might find mild interest in how this copse has survived while surrounding land was developed, but it's not the sort of place with interpretation boards or dramatic heritage claims. It's simply a proper bit of woodland that still functions as one.

If you're staying at Waterrow Touring Park, Egypt Copse makes a straightforward morning walk before heading elsewhere. It won't eat your whole day, and frankly that's part of its appeal. No queues, no entrance fees, no manufactured experience. Just trees and quiet. Families with young kids will manage fine on the flatter sections, though rambling teenagers might find it a touch dull. Best visited in autumn when the light filters through more interestingly.
