Elegug Stack Rocks

Two towering limestone stacks rise dramatically from the sea just off the Pembrokeshire coast near Pembroke, and they're properly striking from the clifftop path. The Elegug Stacks - the name comes from the Welsh for "guillemot" - jut straight up from the water like the fingers of a submerged giant. You get the best view from the coastal path that runs between Pembroke and Tenby, and it's a cracking spot for photographs, especially in golden hour light.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this. It's not a destination in itself - you're looking at thirty minutes to an hour maximum, depending on how long you faff about with your camera - but it slots brilliantly into a wider coastal walk. The path here is well-trodden and manageable, though watch your footing on the cliff sections if it's been wet.

The real magic is the seabirds. Guillemots nest on those stacks in summer, and if you're here between April and August, you'll see them wheeling about in considerable numbers. Bring binoculars. Winter visits are quieter, the light's lower, and the sea churns grey beneath the rocks.

It's free to visit and open year-round - just turn up. If you're camping nearby at Parke Farm or King's Mill, both within a couple of miles, you've got an easy morning outing before heading further afield. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes right by here, so anchor it into a longer day's walking rather than making a special trip just for the view.
