Enclosure Buttress

The walk up to Enclosure Buttress takes you out of Hope Valley and into proper gritstone country. You're climbing towards a rocky outcrop that juts out from the hillside - nothing massive, but the views back across the valley are genuinely worth the leg work. On a clear day you can see for miles, and the rock formation itself is a decent scramble if you're into that sort of thing.

This is one for walkers who know what they're after rather than casual strollers. The path isn't brutal, but it's not a gentle riverside amble either. Allow a couple of hours if you're stopping to take photos and catch your breath. It's the sort of spot where you might bump into climbers or experienced hikers rather than families with pushchairs.

The real appeal is that it's genuine walking terrain without the crowds you'd get at some of the honeypot viewpoints nearby. Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just five miles away, making this a natural half-day adventure if you're based there for a longer park holiday. It works well as part of a bigger day - combine it with other walks in the Hope Valley without feeling like you've spent all afternoon queuing for a photo opportunity.

Go when the weather's decent. The exposure isn't scary, but you won't see much if low cloud rolls in. Sunrise or early morning is your best bet for snagging the view without bumping into weekend crowds.
