National Trust Padley Gorge

The River Derwent cuts through a steep-sided valley here, and you're walking straight into it. Padley Gorge is a proper woodland ravine - the kind of place where the light gets a bit murky even at midday because the trees crowd so densely overhead. The National Trust owns it, which means the footpaths are well-maintained and you won't find litter or chaos.

It's a walk, not a destination you'd linger at for hours. Most people cover the main route in 45 minutes to an hour, following the river on a path that dips and climbs through ancient oak and birch woodland. The gorge itself is the draw - sheer stone walls, moss-covered boulders, a real sense of being enclosed by landscape. Children tend to enjoy it more than you'd expect, especially if there's water in the stream and rocks to clamber over.

Access is free, and there's limited parking nearby (arrive early if you're going at weekends). The walk can be muddy underfoot, particularly after rain, so proper footwear matters. It's best visited outside peak summer when the paths get chogged up with people.

From the Hope Valley, you're well-positioned for tackling this alongside other walks in the area. Nearby campsites like North Lees and Secret Wood Glamping make decent bases if you're staying put for a few days. The gorge works as a morning walk before heading elsewhere - it doesn't demand a full day, but it's worth the detour if you're already in the valley.
