About Exmouth Sea Wall

Built in the 1840s to protect Exmouth from storm surges and high tides, this Victorian sea wall stretches for nearly two miles along the town's waterfront. You can walk the entire length, taking in views across the Exe Estuary towards Dawlish Warren and beyond to the red cliffs of the Devon coast. The wall itself is a proper piece of engineering - thick stone blocks that have withstood decades of battering from winter storms. Along the way you'll pass the railway line that runs right alongside, with trains to Exeter rattling past every half hour or so. Kids love waving at the drivers. The eastern end near the lifeboat station offers the best estuary views, while the western stretch takes you past some lovely Georgian terraces. It's completely free to walk and there's no set route - just follow the pavement that runs along the top. Allow an hour for the full walk, though you could easily spend longer if you stop for fish and chips or a pint at one of the seafront pubs. Best visited on a clear day when you can see right across to Teignmouth. Perfect for families staying at nearby parks like Dawlish Sands or Devon Cliffs - it's an easy drive down the coast and gives the kids a proper seaside walk without the crowds of busier resorts.
