Fagra Hill

The walk up Fagra Hill takes about forty minutes from the car park, and it's one of those Scottish Lowland climbs that doesn't look like much on the map but rewards you properly once you're up there. The path winds through moorland and scrub, steep in places but nothing that'll defeat a reasonably fit family. From the top, you get views across to the Solway Firth and back towards Kirkcudbright - on a clear day it's genuinely excellent, though the Scottish weather being what it is, you might find yourself in cloud.

This is the sort of walk that suits people who want a genuine hill experience without committing to a full mountain day. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the ascent a slog. History buffs won't find much interpretation up there, but walkers just after a decent leg-stretch and proper views will rate it. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the top.

If you're based at Silver Craigs Campsite or Domes By The Sea - both just under five miles away - it makes a natural day out. Pair it with a mooch around Kirkcudbright itself, which has the galleries and the working harbour, and you've got a proper half-day sorted. Seaward Holiday Park, a touch further at six miles, works as a base too. Free to access, obviously - it's a Scottish hill.
