Falcondale Big Wood

Walking into Falcondale Big Wood feels like stepping into proper old Wales. This is serious woodland - the kind with high beech and oak canopy that blocks out most of the sky, and a floor thick enough with leaf litter that your footsteps barely make a sound. It's the sort of place where the air smells of damp earth and decay, which sounds grim but actually isn't.

The wood sits just outside Lampeter in Ceredigion, and it's genuinely worth the detour if you're camping nearby. The trails wind through mature forest, and you'll spot evidence of forestry work alongside older, undisturbed sections. It's not dramatic like a mountain walk, but there's something calming about being enclosed by trees this old. History types will note the remnants of past land management; walkers will appreciate the shelter on drizzly days.

Allow a couple of hours minimum - longer if you're the sort who stops to poke about in woodland. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter. Access appears to be free and open, though facilities are minimal. This isn't a destination park with information boards and picnic tables. It's just woodland.
