Falling Foss Waterfall

The walk down to Falling Foss is steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs, but the payoff is genuine. Water crashes down through a narrow ravine just outside Whitby, and on a decent day the mist catches the light in a way that makes the smartphone photos look almost believable. It's not enormous - you won't mistake it for Niagara - but there's something satisfying about finding a proper waterfall this close to the coast.

The trail itself takes about thirty minutes from the car park at Littlebeck, meandering through woodland before you drop down to the pool beneath the falls. Families with younger kids might find the descent a bit much on the way back up, especially if legs are tired, but primary school age and upwards should manage fine. It's free and there's no nonsense with opening hours - you just show up.

Best visited after heavy rain when the water's got some real force behind it. Summer can leave it looking a touch underwhelming if you've had a dry spell. Allow a couple of hours all in, and bring proper walking shoes - the path gets slippery.

If you're staying at Northcliffe & Seaview or Whitby Holiday Park, this makes a proper morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's an easy drive from any of the parks near Whitby, and it breaks up a seaside holiday nicely if the beach gets monotonous. Pair it with a walk along the Esk Valley and you've got a solid day out.
