Famish Hill

The walk up Famish Hill, just outside Stroud, is proper Cotswolds walking - nothing flashy, just good honest terrain that rewards you with views across the valleys. It's not one of those exhausting slogs either. Most people get up and back in under an hour, which makes it ideal if you're staying at Cherry Tree Glamping down the road and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full afternoon expedition.

From the top you get a real sense of the landscape rolling away - the sort of view that explains why people settled here centuries ago. The name's a bit grim, mind. Local legend says it's where hungry hikers used to run out of steam, though honestly the climb's gentle enough that you won't starve before reaching the summit.

This is walker country, pure and simple. Families with decent-aged kids will enjoy it; toddlers in buggies, less so. History types might appreciate the landscape itself - you're looking at old Cotswold territory, where the wool trade built fortunes - but there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards up here. It's about the walk and the air and the actual view, not being told what to think about it.

Free to visit, naturally. Go on a clear day if you can - the haze settles in these valleys and cuts the distance visibility short. Works perfectly as a morning outing if you're basing yourself at one of the glamping spots nearby, then heading into Stroud for lunch afterwards.
