Far Hill

The highest point in Lincolnshire sounds grander than it actually is, and that's rather the appeal. Far Hill tops out at a modest 423 feet, which means you won't be gasping for breath or need specialist kit - just a decent pair of walking boots and about twenty minutes from the car park near Grantham.

What you get is proper fenland perspective. On a clear day, the views stretch across the flat agricultural landscape in ways you simply don't appreciate from ground level. The hill itself is manageable for families with younger kids, though it's less a dramatic climb and more a steady walk through working countryside. The summit's marked with a trig point, which feels like a genuine achievement even if you're only 400-odd feet up.

Historically inclined visitors might find the local archaeology interesting - there's evidence of ancient settlement round here - but honestly, this is more about the walk than the destination. Don't expect visitor facilities or interpretation boards. You're after the exercise, the air, and that rare Lincolnshire elevation.

Going in autumn works well: the light's better and you won't melt trudging uphill. It pairs nicely with a stay at Wagtail Country Park just down the road - gives you a proper outdoor morning before heading back to base. Worth the detour if you're in Grantham anyway, but don't make a special trip from elsewhere. It's a decent local walk, not a pilgrimage destination.
