Farewell Gorse

A proper forest walk rather than a formal attraction, Farewell Gorse sits on the edge of Rugeley and delivers exactly what it says on the tin - gorse, trees, and the kind of quiet that's increasingly rare around the Midlands. The woodland here is dense enough to feel like you've actually left town, with paths that wind through mixed woodland and occasional open glades where the gorse really does put on a show in spring. It's the sort of place where you notice things - birdsong, lichen on old oaks, the smell after rain.

This one's best suited to casual walkers rather than serious hikers. You could spend an hour here without feeling rushed, but it won't keep dedicated ramblers occupied all day. Kids who like exploring will get on with it fine, though there's nothing flashy to hold their attention - no playgrounds, no visitor centre, just woods. Families camping at Chase Camping at Four Oaks Farm only four miles away could easily slot this into a morning before heading elsewhere.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though opening times aren't advertised anywhere obvious. The forest is most rewarding in late spring when the gorse blooms, or in autumn when the light filters differently through the canopy. Summer can get a bit muggy and overgrown. If you're in Rugeley sorting out supplies or other local bits, it's absolutely worth a detour - perhaps thirty minutes to an hour depending on how deep you wander into the trees.
