Featherston's Plantation

Deep in County Durham woodland south of Bishop Auckland, Featherston's Plantation is one of those forests that doesn't announce itself loudly - which is precisely why it's worth seeking out. It's a proper working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction, so expect mature trees, forest floor quietly doing its thing, and paths that feel genuinely remote despite being just a few miles from civilisation.

Walkers will get the most from this place. The woodland offers decent routes through mixed plantations, and there's something satisfying about following established paths through the canopy without hitting a gift shop at the end. Dog walkers love it too - plenty of room to let them off lead, though it's working forest so you'll want to stick to marked trails and keep an ear out for logging operations. Half an hour to an hour is enough to get a feel for it; a couple of hours if you're doing a proper woodland ramble.

There's not a vast amount of visitor infrastructure - no cafés, no playgrounds - so this isn't the place for families wanting entertainment between activities. But if you've got kids who'll happily splash in streams and hunt for woodland creatures, they'll find it peaceful rather than boring.
