Scarsdale Head

The walk up Scarsdale Head rewards you with proper fell views across County Durham's upper reaches. It's not a dramatic summit - we're talking moorland rather than alpine drama - but the climb from Bishop Auckland way is steady and manageable, taking most people around an hour or so depending on fitness and which path you fancy.

You get views back towards Weardale and across to the surrounding peaks, which on a clear day stretches far enough to make the effort feel worthwhile. Walkers will appreciate the straightforward route and the chance to add it onto longer moorland circuits in the area. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper hike will find it accessible enough, though younger legs might grumble about the final push.

There's no visitor facility up top - bring water and something to eat if you're stopping. The whole experience is free, naturally. Timing-wise, aim for mid-week in summer if you want relative peace, and avoid it straight after heavy rain when the paths get boggy and hard work.
