Ffrwd Fawr Waterfall

The waterfall thunders down a rocky gorge near Llanbrynmair, and it's genuinely worth seeking out if you're in Powys. Ffrwd Fawr isn't some manicured tourist trap - you actually have to walk for it, which keeps the crowds manageable and means the experience feels earned rather than packaged.

The cascade itself is proper impressive, especially after heavy rain when the water's really moving. The surrounding woodland feels remote enough to make you forget you're in mid-Wales rather than somewhere far more exotic. It's a solid two-hour round trip from the car park if you take your time and aren't rushing.

Families with reasonably fit kids will manage this fine, though the path gets muddy and steep in sections. Solo walkers absolutely love it - there's something about standing in front of that much falling water that clears your head. History types might find it less gripping than some attractions, but the geology of the gorge itself is interesting if you're into that sort of thing.

Being free and with no formal opening hours means you can visit whenever suits, though mornings tend to be quieter. If you're based at Cringoed Caravan Park, it's well within striking distance for a morning or afternoon excursion. Factor in wet weather gear - the spray around the waterfall base can be heavy, and the paths are slippery year-round. Late autumn and winter see fewer visitors but the light's often better. Proper job for a rainy week break.
