Fiddler's Bay Cave

Clambering down the rocky shoreline near Burnham-on-Sea, you'll find this natural cave carved into the limestone cliffs by centuries of tide action. Fiddler's Bay Cave isn't signposted or developed - it's just there, waiting for the curious to explore.

The cave itself is fairly modest, perhaps 20 metres deep at low tide, with rough walls and a sandy floor that shifts with each storm. Best tackled when the tide's well out, as the entrance can flood completely during spring tides. Proper walking boots are essential - the rocks are slippery and the approach requires a bit of scrambling.

Families with older children who fancy a mini adventure will get the most from it. Little ones might find the rocky descent a challenge, though teenagers love the slightly wild feel of discovering something off the beaten track. History buffs should know this isn't an ancient dwelling or anything dramatic - just geology doing its thing over millennia.
