It's free, naturally, and you can walk it year-round though autumn and winter deliver the most dramatic conditions. Allow a good hour for the walk there and back from Filey town centre, depending on your pace and whether you stop to actually look at things. The path itself is straightforward - no scrambling involved - but it does get a bit exposed as you head towards the brigg, so bring a windproof if there's a breeze.

History buffs will appreciate that you're walking where people have walked for centuries; the brigg marks the end of the Centenary Way trail if you're doing that as a longer route. Families with younger kids might find the walk a touch dull unless the tide's dramatic, but teenagers and keen walkers will get something from the coastal views and the chance to spot birds - you'll see guillemots and kittiwakes nesting on the cliffs in summer.

Staying at one of the caravan parks within a couple of miles - Centenary Way or Blue Dolphin are closest - makes this an easy morning outing before heading to Primrose Valley or Reighton Sands for something more structured. It's the kind of walk that feels like actual Yorkshire rather than tourist Yorkshire.
