Filey Methodist Church

Standing on Queen Street in the heart of Filey, this Victorian Methodist church cuts a proper figure with its red brick facade and pointed Gothic windows. Built in the 1870s when the seaside town was booming with railway tourists, it's still very much an active place of worship rather than a tourist attraction.

The interior follows classic Methodist lines - simple wooden pews, clear glass windows letting in plenty of North Sea light, and a pulpit that speaks to the denomination's preaching tradition. It's not going to compete with York Minster for architectural drama, but there's something rather lovely about its understated elegance.

Families staying at the nearby Haven parks - Primrose Valley and Blue Dolphin are both within a couple of miles - might find it worth a quick look if they're wandering through Filey's town centre. The building represents a slice of the town's Victorian heritage, when Methodist chapels were sprouting up across Yorkshire's coastal communities.

Don't expect guided tours or gift shops - this is a working church first and foremost. Services are still held here, and the building occasionally hosts community events. It's more of a five-minute appreciation stop than a dedicated visit, best combined with exploring Filey's shops, grabbing fish and chips, or heading down to the beach and famous Brigg headland.
