Fleckit Rig

The walk up Fleckit Rig rewards you with proper views across Dumfries and Galloway, though you'll need to work for them. It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical climb, making it accessible for most walkers without specialist kit, but the path does get boggy in places and the final push is steeper than you'd expect from the height alone.

From the top, you're looking out across moorland and forest with Castle Douglas visible in the distance - worth the effort if you're after that sense of space and solitude rather than dramatic peaks. The whole thing takes about two hours there and back, depending on pace and how long you linger. Summer's obviously best, though even then bring waterproofs; the weather can turn quickly up here.

Families with teenagers will find it manageable. Younger kids might struggle with the boggy bits and find the landscape a touch bleak. Serious hill walkers will want something more challenging, but if you're staying in the area and fancy half a day on your feet, it does the job.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Loch Ken Holiday Park is genuinely close by, or you could tackle it as a break from Galloway Glamping or Mollance Farm - it's a no-brainer to fit in. Not a highlight trip in itself, but exactly the kind of walk that stops a week from feeling like you've only sat in the caravan.
