Mid Hill

Sweeping views across the Solway Firth make this modest hill worth the climb, though you'll work for them. Mid Hill stands as one of several peaks in this rolling corner of Dumfries & Galloway, offering a proper walk without the drama of the bigger Scottish mountains.

Reaching the summit takes about an hour from the nearest parking spot, following sheep tracks that can get boggy after rain. The 466-metre peak doesn't sound like much, but the relatively flat surrounding countryside means you get surprisingly expansive views. On clear days you can spot the Lake District fells across the water and the Isle of Man beyond.

Walkers will appreciate the peaceful isolation - this isn't a crowded spot like some of the more famous Galloway hills. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of rough terrain will enjoy it, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven ground.

Castle Douglas sits just a few miles away, making this an easy addition to a Galloway Forest Park exploration. Several holiday parks dot the area around Loch Ken and the coast at Kippford, so Mid Hill works well as a morning walk before an afternoon by the water. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, and pack waterproofs - weather changes quickly in these parts.
