The sound of water lapping against stone walls drifts across Castle Douglas most mornings - this market town sits at the northern tip of Carlingwark Loch, surrounded by the gentle hills of Galloway. Getting here is straightforward enough - Castle Douglas sits on the A75, about 18 miles from Dumfries. The town itself is compact and walkable, though you'll want a car to reach the better hills like Redcroft Hill or explore the network of lochs that dot the surrounding countryside.
