Floud Wood

You'll find yourself surrounded by proper woodland the moment you step into Floud Wood - dense beech and oak that's been doing its thing for centuries just outside Petersfield. It's the sort of place where the light filters through in shafts and you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than you'd expect near a town this size.

The forest floor is soft underfoot, ideal for a gentle wander rather than a serious hike. Most people clock it as a two-hour circuit, though you can easily dip in and out depending on energy levels and how many times your kids decide they absolutely must examine a toadstool. The tree canopy is thick enough to keep things cool even in summer, which is genuinely useful on a sticky Hampshire afternoon.

It's really a walker's wood rather than somewhere you'd stop for an afternoon with zero activity. History buffs might get something from the sense of continuity - these trees have been here longer than the roads - but you won't find information boards or a visitor centre. What you get is peace and shade, which shouldn't be underestimated.
