Flusco Hill

Flusco Hill is a modest fell just outside Penrith that rewards a straightforward climb with proper views across the Eden Valley and towards the High Street peaks. It's not a destination that'll take your breath away in the Instagram sense, but it's honest work and the walk clears your head.

The ascent is gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the trudge dull - it's only about 500 metres of climbing, which sounds manageable until you're halfway up and the path narrows. Most people allow an hour to the summit and back, though you could stretch it to ninety minutes if you're dawdling. The fell is free to access year-round; there's no gate, no fee, just you and the fell.

Go on a clear day or don't bother. The views matter here. On bad weather days Flusco becomes exactly what it looks like from the car park - a lump of moorland with no redeeming features.

If you're based at Waterfoot Caravan Park or Park Foot Holiday Park, both practically on your doorstep, Flusco Hill makes a decent morning outing before heading elsewhere. It works as a warm-up for people tackling the bigger Lake District walks later in the week. Seasoned walkers won't find it challenging. Kids who like being outside and don't need constant entertainment will enjoy it. Everyone else should honestly consider driving five minutes further for something with more character.
