Football field

The Football Field nature reserve sits just outside Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire, and it's one of those places that rewards a quiet morning walk far more than it rewards a quick visit. Don't expect manicured paths or interpretation boards - this is proper wildlife habitat, the kind where you might spot waders and waterfowl if you're patient enough to stand still for five minutes.

It's essentially a coastal wetland with rough grassland and shallow pools, working as a breeding ground for birds and a stopping point for migrants depending on the season. Walkers and birdwatchers get the most out of it, particularly during spring and autumn passage when you might clock something unusual. Families won't find much here beyond a decent leg-stretch and the chance to spot moorhens and perhaps a heron if luck's on their side.

The whole thing is free to access - no gates, no fees - though parking and facilities are basic. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're serious about the birds and want to loop properly. Early morning is best, before the light gets too flat and before anyone else disturbs things.

It slots well into a Pembrokeshire coast holiday, especially if you're based at Eco Escape Campsite or Grass Roots just down the road. Use it as a warm-up for bigger walks along the coastal paths, or combine it with a visit to Milford Haven itself if you fancy town time. Not dramatic or showy, but genuinely worth the detour if you like your nature unvarnished.
